The greatest concentration of narrow gauge railways in britain was to be found in Ireland where, between 1970s and 1920 over 530 miles of 3 ft gauge track were constructed. The last of these lines closed in 1961 and these films were shot between 1939 and 1959 and inlcude the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway, The county Donegal Railway, the Cavaan & Leitrim Railway, the Tralee & Dingle Railway and the West Clare Railway.

This programme looks at some of the workings frequently used by steam. A long section is devoted to the loose coupled steam hauled goods trains which would soon pass into history. The dock lines in Belfast are explored and in a country where industrial railways were rare, a special sequence feature the pair of 5ft 3in gauge Pecket saddletanks, which were employed by Courtaulds at Carrickfergus in County Antrim

This dvd begins with three narrow gauge lines in Ulster, the County Donegal, the Londerry & Lough Swilly and the Ballycastle line in Country Antrim all filmed in 1950. Then on the the broad gauge of the Great Northern main line in 1947 with shots inside Dundalk works and also the railbus. Coverage of the Dublin to Cork route in 1947 follows then back to Dublin after a visit to Inchicore works filmed in 1950. Then follows the Cavan & Leitrim narrow gauge line and also the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties line after which shots of the Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway. Finally a look at the former Cork, Bandon and South Coast Railway in west Cork and two of the branch lines in County Kerry.

Shows much rare footage made on the railways between 1930s and 1960s in the South East of England. Beginning at London Bridge in 1931 with a 'Schools' class 4-4-0 in original conidtion. Rare colour footage taken in 1938 at London bridge and Sutton follows. Further footage between London bridge and Norwood Junction, then East Croydon, Folkestone with both main line expresses and boat trains on the Harbour branch. Scenes of the Golden Arrow and other SR steam hauled Pullmans, Brighton steam survivors features an Atlantic, a Rememberance 4-6-0 and the Brighton works shunter, a Terrirer in LBSCR style yellow livery recorded at the works on the Kemp Town branch. Finally shots of the branch and secondary lines in the South East with the Bluebell Railway from East Grinstead to Lewes and the Kent & East Sussex in the 1950s and 1960s. Finishing with shots of the branch lines from Dunton Green to Westerham and from Paddock Wood to Hawkhurst.

Starts with scenes of the Severn Valley Line Kidderminster to Bewdley and Tenbury Wells and woofferton. Then into Wales, centred on Brecon , Neath Riverside station, the former Neath and Brecon line then the Brecon and Merthyr system which includes the 7 mile bank beyond Talybont on Usk, one of the most challenging inclines on a British Railway. Followed by shots from Talylln hunction to Three Cocks junction and on to Hay on Wye through to Hereford before going up the Cambrian line withrough mid Wales to Builth Road low level. On from Abergwili junction near Camarthen through to Craven Arms and then south from Moat Lane junction near Caersws back to Brecon. Finally shots of the exGWR branch from Bala Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog and two pannier tanks climbing the summit near Cwm Prysor.

Used to convey peat harvested in the bogs to power stations and processing plants, long trains of bogie wagons are hauled considerable distances. Locomotives built by Hunslet, Simplex, Ruston and Deutz, Gleismacs built at the old GNR works at Dundalk and new 3ft gauge locos built in Ireland in the 1990s by Bord na Mona are all seen in action.

This dvd was filmed mostly in the summer 1995 using broadcast qulaity Betacam cameras, trains are seen out on the bogs, at power stations, crossing specially built viaducts and a swing bridge over the Grand Canal, and, in one memorable sequence, where a narrow gauge line passes under the main Dublin to Cork railway, trains on Ireland's two gauges are seen in action at the same time.

Subtitled from Steam to Diesel. Follows on chronologically from the fifth volume in the series this begins with some of the last steam workings on the CIE network in the Irish Republic. These are contrasted with the diesels which were gradually becoming popular. Several types of diesel are featured and various lines visited among which are Foynes, Ballaghaderreen, Fenit, Birr and Goughal. Then the location moves north to show a variety of former Great Northern and LMS/NCC steam engines.

Finally shots of the pier railways at Southend and Hythe, the Ramsgate Tunnel Railway, the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch and the Volks Electric Railway in Brighton.

Volume 1 of the Irish Railways series - subtitled Filmes from the 1950s - 1970s. This covers films from the 1950s through to 1970s on both 5ft 3 in standard gauge tracks and the famous narrow gauge lines. It also inlcudes a film made by John Laird of the Great Northern 's Belfast terminus at Great Victoria Street which closed in the 1970s. The new station opened on its site by Northern ireland Railways in 1995 and a film made by Edwin Wilmshurst of steam trains at work on the Loughrea branch in County Galway.

Coverage shot during the 1950s and 1960s. Routes featured are in the Western Region - auto trains on the Gloucester to Chalfond service and branch lines to Princetown and Ashburton, in the Midlands lines from Stamford to Essendine and Seaton are shown. Then steam byways around London including the Stanmore branch, the service from Ealing Broadway to Greenford and the West London line. Among the Southern Region branches and secondary lines visited are those to Lymington, Swanage, Hayling Island, the Guildford to Horsham service and lines centred on Tunbridge Wells West which served Oxted, hailsham and Lewes. Then over to East anglia on the former Midland and Great Northern joint system.

Subtitled A Journey through the 1950s part 1. Shot during the early 1950s from one end of the country to the other. Highlights include on the 3ft gauge steam on the West Clare and the famous cattle specials on the Tralee & Dinle line and on the broad gauge the Dublin to Cork main line at a period when almost all the trains were hauled by steam locomotives. There are extended sequences at Kildare and Limerick Junction, steam on Dublin's Harcourt Street line the Great Northern Railway's Hill of Howth tramway and the variety of motive power which could be seen on the GNR main line in the early 1950s. The programme concludes with an Ex-Eblfast & County Down Railway Baltic tank locomotive at work on the Bangor line.

Ireland's once extensive network of narrow gauge lines is represented by the Londonderry & Lough Swilly and County Donegal Railways and the Cavan & Leitrim section of CIE.
