Shot in 1984 this film of the Last of the Garratts working on a day long ballast train hauled by GMAM Garratt 4088 from Waterval B oven to B reytona nd return. Then on to a doubleheaded class 24 2-8-4s from Breyton to Lothair. Finally shots of the Randfontein Estates Gold Mine Railway near Johannesburg where GMAM Garratts work on this industrial line hauling gold ore.

The George to Knysna branch skirts the Indian Ocean in the southern part of South Africa. This 42 mail line featured class 24, 2-8-2s with Vanderbilt tenders. Most trains were mixed with a coach in the rear. Also seen is the Voorbaai yard and a 24 switching freight cars. The shed in Port Elizabeth is also seen.

In 1984 this 180 mile line from Bethlehem westward to Bloemfontein was 100% steam powered with Class 25NC 4-8-4s and included a daily passenger train, an overnight passenger train plus freights throughout the day. Due to the drought there were daily water trains from Bethlehem as well. A visit to the shed in Bethlehem is also seen.

Other locos are also seen in this area including #1782, 1132 plus various 4-8-4s ready for the scrapper including the first 4-8-4 #2600.
