Churchwards Legacy 150 Glorious Years (73 mins) Ref: CT204D
George Jackson Churchward succeeded William Dean as Chief Mechanical engineer of the GWR in 1902 and over the next 21 years was responsible for laying the foundations for all subsequent locomotive design and construction at Swindon, on the Great Western, and which was to have a bearing on locomotive development on other companies. The legacy of his designs are represented in this DVD by examining locomotive classes such as the legendary 'Star' 'Prairie' and heavy freight tanks as well as the 28xx 2-8-0 the first eight coupled locomotives to be developed in Britain. The lasting legacy of Churchward is the fact that his reolutionary designs were the blueprint for everything that followed, and even today, are still at work doing exactly the work that he originally designed them for.
